April showers can bring more than just May flowers if your sump pump is not functioning. As we are in the midst of spring showers and preparing for summer showers, now is the time to make sure that your sump pump is ready. When your sump pump malfunctions or fails, you could be left with a flooded home. FitzGerald and Sons Plumbing Company has handled many sump pump emergencies, so we want to help you avoid one. By preparing now, you can make sure your sump pump is ready for the next storm.

When Your Sump Pump Fails…

  •       Your Home (generally basement or crawlspace) Could Flood
  •       Your Home and Belongings Could Be Water Damaged
  •       Your Home Could Develop Mold From The Moisture
  •       Your Home Could Require Significant and Expensive Repairs

How to Check Your Sump Pump

If you want peace of mind about your sump pump, you can complete a simple test of your sump pump following these steps.

  1.     Locate the discharge pipe from the pump. Double check that it is not obstructed with dirt, leaves, or other debris and the drain piping is clean.
  2.     Find and fill a large cooking pot or 5 gallon bucket with water. Pour the water slowly into the sump pit and observe the water level inside.
  3.     The sump pump’s float should rise, and the pump should turn on before the water level reaches the top of the pit. Once the pit empties, your pump should turn itself back off.
  4.     If the float did not rise or the on/off functions did not work as described, give us a call. Your sump pump needs to be examined further by a professional.
  5.     Make sure that your sump pump is plugged into a working outlet. For added peace of mind, consider a battery backup system for your sump pump so it will function even if you lose power during a storm.
